Day One Miami Art Week, Dec 2015

Day one Miami Art Week 2015 Susan Mclennan

I felt like a kid at Disneyland for the first time,
heart beating with excitement and anticipation
walking into the vast open space, light grey walls and shiny white floors.
people in black t- shirts and jeans continuously circulated
silently as they rolled the cameras past, slipping by without intrusion
Piles of large unpainted wooden crates, stacked like a toddlers old fashioned building blocks and drilling noises hummed and screeched.
More ladders in one place than I have ever seen before,
more ladders than people it seemed,
scraping, shining, opening and folding.
People were focused, organized, intense, polite  while concentrating on their task.
Beads of sweat glisten on their faces and trickle down their spines.
Artists fuelled by the complimentary chocolate, bottled water, and ice tea.
Time is ticking.
Where is the light crew,
maybe I should hang more paintings just
add two more to the wall.
I study my story boards,
‘less is more’ so they say, making
less my risk not theirs.
I take the last two paintings down
one painting alone on the wall it deserves the attention.
Time is ticking.
More water, more ice tea, thank you chocolate.
I study my story boards again and
the crew rolls by filming my indecision,
I glance in my crate then take out the boldest piece.
Be confident
Maybe Mickey Mouse or Kim Kardashian will show up for a selfie.
